Things You Should Know

Picture
Hamsters live on average 2 to 4 years. They aren't just like a plants; you have to make a commitment. They require food, water and love. You will have to change its food and water every 2 days. Also every 5 days you will need to scoop out the "potty spot" where they use the bathroom most often. It is required that you clean the entire cage once every 1.5 weeks. You should hold them daily (for more info on that see 'Holding and Taming', below) A hamster plus all the supplies can cost up to $200. You will need a lot for them. They also need safe items to chew on because their teeth never stop growing.

Holding and Taming

Picture
I know that when you get your hamster, the first thing you want to do is hold and pet your new hamster. Once you bring your hamster home you should have its cage ready and then just put him/her in their cage. Just watch them for a few days (5-7days) before you try to hold them.
Taming Steps:
Step One: Just see if your hamster allows you to pet it without picking it up when its in its cage.
Step Two: After a week of petting them daily try to hand feed them a treat. Continue this for a week.
Step Three: Place a treat in the palm of your hand and when they crawl onto your hand pick them up to a safe height (1ft to 1.5ft) above their cage.
Step Four: Try step three again but once they are in your palm bring them close to your body and snuggle them with both hands.
Now you have a tamed hamster...continue to hold your hamster daily, and they will become more and more friendly.
